We Need Diverse Books

We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) is a non-profit organization that originated as a viral social media movement in 2014 to address the lack of representation in children’s literature. Its mission is to produce and promote literature that reflects the lives of all young people, operating on the philosophy that books should serve as both “mirrors” for children to see themselves and “windows” to help them understand others. The organization takes a holistic approach to diversifying the publishing “pipeline” by providing grants and mentorships for marginalized creators, offering internship subsidies to diversify publishing staff, and donating thousands of inclusive books to low-income classrooms and libraries across the country.
