Society of Professional Journalists

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press and the encouragement of high ethical standards. Founded in 1909 as the fraternity Sigma Delta Chi, it has evolved into a professional society representing nearly 7,500 members across all media platforms, including broadcast, print, and digital. The organization is perhaps best known for the SPJ Code of Ethics, a widely utilized framework that guides journalists to seek truth, minimize harm, act independently, and be accountable. Through its advocacy for First Amendment rights, provision of professional development, and the administration of prestigious honors like the Sigma Delta Chi Awards, the SPJ works to ensure a well-informed citizenry and a resilient democracy.
