Association of Writers and Writing Programs
The Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) is a premier 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves as the primary professional and academic hub for the creative writing community in North America. Founded in 1967 by fifteen writers representing thirteen programs, it has grown to support nearly 50,000 writers and over 500 college and university creative writing programs. AWP is best known for hosting the AWP Conference & Bookfair, the largest literary marketing and networking event in the United States, which draws thousands of attendees for panels, readings, and a massive exhibition of independent presses and literary journals. Beyond its annual gathering, the association provides vital career advocacy, a national mentorship program, and The Writer’s Chronicle, a leading magazine dedicated to the craft and business of writing.
