Alliance of Independent Authors

The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) is a premier global non-profit professional association dedicated to empowering self-publishing authors through a mission of “ethics and excellence.” Founded in 2012 by Orna Ross and Philip Lynch at the London Book Fair, the organization provides a robust support system for “author-publishers” at every stage of their career—from those drafting their first manuscript (Associates) to high-earning “Authorpreneurs.” ALLi is widely recognized for its Watchdog Desk, which rigorously vets industry services to protect writers from predatory “vanity” presses and scams. Members gain access to a wealth of exclusive resources, including a private community forum, contract and legal advice, and a comprehensive directory of approved service partners, as well as significant discounts on essential tools like IngramSpark.

Beyond individual author support, ALLi is a powerful advocacy group that campaigns for “Opening Up to Indie Authors,” working to ensure self-published creators have equal access to literary prizes, book festivals, and library distribution. The association also hosts the Self-Publishing Advice Conference (SelfPubCon) and produces a suite of authoritative guidebooks covering the “seven stages of publishing,” from editorial and design to rights licensing. By fostering a collaborative environment where “independent doesn’t mean alone,” ALLi has established itself as the gold standard for writers looking to build sustainable, professional, and profitable independent publishing businesses.
