SmokeLong Quarterly
SmokeLong Quarterly (SLQ) is a premier online literary journal established in 2003, making it a pioneer in the digital promotion of flash fiction. The magazine’s name is derived from a Chinese term for “smoke-long” stories—narratives that can be read in the time it takes to smoke a single cigarette. Dedicated exclusively to the flash form, the quarterly publishes stories of 1,000 words or fewer that prioritize surprising language and emotional resonance. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Christopher Allen, SLQ has gained a stellar reputation for its inclusive, global perspective and its “pro-rate” payment to authors. The journal is a frequent source for major anthologies, including Best Small Fictions and the Wigleaf Top 50, and it fosters a deep sense of community through its “SmokeLong Fitness” workshops, mentorship programs, and the prestigious SmokeLong Quarterly Award for Flash Fiction.
