The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA), formerly known as the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA), is a premier professional organization dedicated to empowering Indigenous voices and ensuring accurate, contextual representation of Indigenous communities in the media. Founded in 1983, the association serves a global membership of nearly 900 journalists, educators, and media professionals across North America and beyond. Its mission centers on the belief that truthful storytelling is essential to a healthy democracy and is key to overcoming the persistent biases and stereotypes found in mainstream reporting. Through its annual Indigenous Media Conference, the prestigious Indigenous Media Awards, and various fellowship and mentorship programs, the IJA provides critical resources for professional development while advocating for press freedom and ethical standards within both tribal and mainstream newsrooms.
